Feel your feelings.

Isn't it just impossible to get up and run some days? I had my alarm set for 7 a.m. and by the time I rolled out of bed it was 8:30. When all was said and done, I didn't make it to the gym until about 9:30 this morning. The amazing thing about writing your own blog is that it can be so motivating. Like, say I were to a be a bum, and yet I'm calling this a fitness/running/lifestyle blog. That would be so UNCOOL.  Instead, because I want to make sure I'm healthy for myself and writing about things that I actually do, I pulled it together and ran 7 miles at the gym.

Mind you, these 7 miles came at a price.  I basically had to trick myself each mile to keep my legs moving.  I did take a break at 2.5 miles for about a minute, but then got back on that ol' treadmill and told myself to take it slow but steady. I think my average pace was 8:40, but I'm not sure.  Why was it SO easy to run the 5 miles on Friday and yet so so SO difficult to run 7 on Sunday? If my body can handle it, then why is my brain getting in the way? What is about feelings and/or your mindset that can make or break a workout?

What do you do for motivation when you want to give up? Any tricks of the trade?

After finishing my workout, I huffed and I puffed all the way back to school...on a Sunday. Sad Face. I realized I forgot a file for something that is due on Monday, which forced me to beg and plead to get into the building. This inspired me to give you readers a tour of my office and what it is a School Psychologist actually does, mostly because I was avoiding getting the task done.

(The Zen Wall in my office.)

Basically, a school psychologist let's students (and adults...many times it's the adults) feel their feelings.

Just, let it all out.

The National Association of School Psychologists states that:

"School psychologists help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community for all students.

School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education, completing a minimum of a specialist-level degree program (at least 60 graduate semester hours) that includes a year-long supervised internship. This training emphasizes preparation in mental health and educational interventions, child development, learning, behavior, motivation, curriculum and instruction, assessment, consultation, collaboration, school law, and systems. School psychologists must be certified and/or licensed by the state in which they work."

That's a real purtyy way of putting it. The bulk of my job is to test for learning and emotional disabilities as defined by the state education department, which have a significant effect on a student's progress and their ability to access the curriculum.  I also provide counseling to students in my building.

Most days, I leave here feeling very tired and my job can zap my running mojo. Lots of emotions around here all of the time. I find it tricky to balance everything that comes along with working a full time job, as so many times we are here after the school bell rings. When you leave the building late, its cross country/track season, add in a 45 min-1 hour commute, and its dinnertime...you might find me eating some nights instead of running.

I'm sure many of you can understand what its like to try to balance your career with your family, friends, and self.  I am impressed that anyone anywhere can fit in a workout half of the time when they also work full time.  Maybe its just the facade of the blogging world, or maybe, just maybe, you are all really good at balancing at all.

Tell me, what is the secret to your success and how do you find that you juggle it all? Is there anything that you find you have to give up to make it work?

  1. I have been told that the hardest part of any journey is getting started! and while the only morning run I do is on a Friday, I find that when the alarm goes off in the morning I need to move are I will loose the battle. I also know I will feel guilty if I see anyone out running on my way to work and I haven't.

    Good Luck with 2014
